Why Flat ?

In order to make the Hexbeam lightweight for portable use the tubes need to be a smaller OD (10mm OD) with thinner walls which makes them more flexible. When the arms are bent into the conventional Hexbeam shape they become unstable in high winds and risk being broken over time. To lower the wind load the arms have been made flat and extra bracing has been added (Only to be installed in permanent, semi-permanent or windy field days) to stop any twisting in gales. Support cords are fitted as standard top and bottom.

Key features

  1. Performs just as good as the HD version, no compromise.
  2. 50 Ohm Balanced square feedline, excellent in the rejection of common-mode noise and interference.
  3. No tuning to be done, works straight out of the box.
  4. Less wind load, better survival rate than standard shaped lightweight Hexbeams.
  5. Use as 6 Band or only as 15, 12, 10 and 6m to save space.
  6. Can be used for permanent or portable.
  7. Faster to deploy with zero tools needed (only two hose clips to tighten on mast/stub mast).
  8. Due to its light weight it can be deployed on a light weight push up mast.
  9. Overcome planning issues with a push up mast; push up antenna only when on air.
  10. Can be Packed away in a 1m long box making it an ideal choice for holidays and DX-peditions.

Is it just for portable use?

No, I have designed the flat Hexbeam for permanent use also, the hex can be mounted on a light weight push up mast where planning for towers and permanent masts cannot always be achieved making it a great antenna for the suburban radio operator. The Flat Hexbeam has been tested over a period of 4 years on my own personal tower at 10m above ground and adjustments have been made where I have thought they have been needed. For reference I live on the SW coast of Wales where we look out to sea towards the SSW where all of our high winds come from, it can get quite windy here at times and not once have I dropped my tower as I was really trying to see if this Hex would break in the wind and it didn’t!

Performance

Just the same great performance as you have come to expect from the HD Hexbeam that I have been making for the past 15 years.

Ant:

On behalf of the PJ6Y DXpedition team, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your recent support. I am pleased to report that the trip was a resounding success. Our multinational on-island team of nine young operators experienced excellent propagation conditions and amazing pileups throughout the course of our time on Saba. Each team member was actively involved in multiple phases of the effort, including planning, equipment setup and tear-down, scheduling, station configuration, as well as diagnosing and resolving a variety of technical challenges ranging from radio malfunctions to antenna issues, one such issue requiring an overhaul of our tri-band Yagi, including rebuilding each of the six traps.

Throughout the course of our adventure, it was rewarding to watch each of the young ops as they became more comfortable working the pileups while improving their skill sets.

Our young team also mounted a serious effort in CQWW SSB, resulting in a raw score of over 13m points, finishing not too far behind some of the best North American stations.

In addition, our off-island team consisted of approximately twenty-five operators, who collectively logged roughly 20,000 QSOs representing nearly one-third of our total contact count, and were instrumental in our overall success. We look forward to some of the off-island team joining us as an on-island team member on an upcoming trip.

We are grateful for your continued support of our projects that advance amateur radio and foster the development of the next generation of DXpeditioners.

Great kit!

We used colored electrical tape on the end of each piece to identify the piece that it connected to. We also color coded the hub. This saved a lot of time with assembly.
