ANOTHER PMT MEMBER MINI DX 26/8/06-2/9/06
Jersey
This time to GJ Jersey, 05.15 alarm going of and a
final check of the car. Sorted, a carm start to the
channel crossing but not long after passing Portland
Bill lighthouse ENG273 those that suffer the sea started
to appear They still had 4 hrs ahead of them along with
us. We were greeted by an over cast Jersey but we were
on holiday for the next week. We took in some of the
island on route our campsite, come evening time we were
sitting in a very nice sun set over looking the Island.
I thought that I try a station from the camp site but
both conditions and antenna sitting was not good and
only 13 entries went into the log.
 Operating from the mobile
Day 2
We took in some more of the sights and attractions
of the island on the West coast, before starting the
first proper station of the holiday using an Alinco
dx70 100w, Carolina Windom 80 special on 20' pole. Starting
at 10.44gmt and closing down at 14.45 a total of 173
contacts went into the log, 1 into JA and a couple into
the states otherwise the remaining were all EU, bands
worked in this session were 40,20,17m. 40 & 20 were
very good but 18 was very hard going, the running total
was 30 DXCC's.
 The Mug!
Day 3
had another few hrs free and changed location for this session started calling
at 15.00hrs and was back in the campsite by 17.00hrs, conditions were very bad
only 30 very had contacts were made mainly DL & UA's
Day 4
no dx.
Day 5
Not the best of starts 25mins into call and clocking up the contacts on 40m
I was told the freq was in use, strange know one had answered my "freq
in use call x3 " and it was only local EU, but they grizzled so much I
couldn't be doing with the trouble as my time was limited I qsy'd to 20m and
started a very good run of contacts into AS, EU, NA. To try and confirm the
island on as many bands I went up to 17 m the contacts were there but a lot
slower I did a few requested qsy's to 15 & 12m to confirm GJ.
Conditions on 17m became very hard going and I dropped back to 20m doing this
brought in calls from states side and 4U1ITU. Time was moving on and things
were slowing down, I had a quick look around the bands before closing down and
picked up a 3X station with a 53 both ways.
Day 6
Brought an evenings dx, this was going to be a 80m
and 160m only evening, with the help of Spiderbeam at
info@spiderbeam.net and there new 18m vertical pole
we had a ¼ wave 80m vertical up and running by
19.24gmt first into the log was fellow www.PMTDXGroup.co.uk
member Ant MW0JZE
and a 5/9++ was greatly received, first outing and call
with the antenna, and we were up and running with a
very good pile up calling and good reports all round. Many
stations from EU were calling then I had a call from
a DL station requesting a QSY above 3.793 as I was being
received in JA. Naturally this was done but alas nothing
was coming back to me. I received a couple sms messages
stating that they could hear me but still nothing.
Then at 20.52 I was informed that VK was trying, please EU stand by was requested
which everyone did MANY TNX for that, and VK3PA was a very pleasing entry into
the logbook with 5/3-5/5 reports.
The evening continued very well with strong calls from all over EU and a solitary
call from 4Z.
Due to rushing and not having time and testing the antenna it did not play on
160m which Im very sorry about, I was looking forward to trying 160 from the
Island. Never mind later in year maybe.
At the end of this session it brought the total up to 558 contacts into 46 dxcc,
this I thought was the end of the dxing for the holiday and would have gone
away very happy. But there is always a down side on the Friday afternoon the
water pump went on the car, due to this driving was now only to be the most
direct route to the ferry and then home no more sightseeing, but due to ferry
not leaving until 19.00hrs we had more time to spare, not wanting to miss any
time I managed to get in a little more dx, for this session I stayed on 40m
and was able to finish a log book of and picking up another DXCC making the
final final total 640 contacts in to 47 DXCC's
Brake down as follows:
33 DXCC 80M
17 DXCC 40M
37 DXCC 20M
16 DXCC 17M
2 DXCC 15M
1 DXCC 12M
At this point a big thanks to all that called in and for standing by when requested
But the biggest thanks go to Mandy my YL for putting up with me doing another
Holiday mini dx
